<summary type="text">ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF MCNICIPAL WATER DEMAND AND SUPPLY FOR A FAST GROWING STATE CAPITAL
AGBEYO, OLABISI A.
Ado-Ekiti the capital city of Ekiti State is being faced by the problem of inadequate water supply due to reasons ranging from socio-economic to technical problems. This research work evaluated the possible causes of inadequate water supply in this urban center as a result of increased influx or people socio-economical growth and industrial growth. The projected population plus the present supply and projected water demand were analyzed to determine the necessary quantity required and the future deficit needs to be taken care of. Also, the geological formation of this area was studied to obtain the proportion supply of the ground water that can serve as additional source or It was realized that the region was dominated by massive charnockite spread and little meta sedimentary rock of the quartize and fractured granitic type. This charnockite does not permit groundwater development hence the limitation to the usage of groundwater.&#13;
 In this work, surface water is seen as the only dependable and reliable source of water in this region. Analysis of the available data on the nearest existing schemes established that about 60% of the production from Little Osse in Egbe can be used to augment the present supply. It is evident as well that the supply from Ero’s end must remain and be steady. Also Ureje must be operating at its fullest production capacity in conjunction with the supplies from these complementary schemes before the problem of water shortage in this region can be alleviated. The aged pipe networks are to be replaced to minimize waste and provide better services. There is also need to embark upon extension work to the newly developed area to promote industrial and socio-economic growth.

TANIMOLA, MOSES OLADEJO
This research project dealt primarily with the effect of Septic tanks on water from shallow wells in Akure metropolis. Shallow wells, being the main water source available to almost every home in the study area which forms part of underground water is facing problems of pollution which can constitute threats to the quality of underground water and public health now or in future. The criteria used in determining the effect of Septic tanks on shallow wells was to take water samples from located wells in the metropolis and analyze them to determine the physical, chemical and biological characteristics. The results of the physical, chemical and bacteriological qualities of the sampled wells have ranges of 7.0- 8.0 for pH, 20.0oc- 27.90c for Temperature, 113 µmho- 1116µmho for conductivity, 26.4mg/l 180.5mg/l for hardness, 18.1mg/l - 140.0mg/l for Calcium, 0.03mg/l 0.88mg/l for manganese, 1.0NTU- 10.0NTU for Turbidity, 1.0mg/l - 311.0mg/l for Sulphate, 0.0mg/l- 140.0mg/l for Nitrate, 0.0mg/l- 3.0mg/l for Phosphate, 0.0TCU- 40.0TCU for colour and 0.0MPN-18.5MPN for Coliform. &#13;
 The results obtained were compared with WHO International Standard on potable water and wells 6,11,13,14,17,19,21,22,25,27,31,41,53 and 55 are contaminated, but the level of contamination is within limit with exception of wells 1, 36 and 44 which have contaminant concentrations exceeding the maximum permissible limit. Shallow wells sited very close to the septic tanks with distance less than 14.0m suffered contamination and had concentrations of chloride, calcium, hardness, sulphate, nitrate, phosphate and coliform exceeding the maximum concentration limits. The concentrations of the parameters mentioned above were used to formulate mathematical relationship between concentrations and distance and model equations were obtained.

<summary type="text">DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES FOR BIOGAS GENERATION FROM ANIMAL DUNG FOR HOUSEHOLD USES
ADEYEMI, ADERONKE ABIDEMI
In this study a simple technique of producing biogas from animal dung under measurable conditions is investigated. The specific objectives are to design, construct and test (using a chosen waste as substrate) a suitable mobile transportable biogas system (digester) which can be easily utilized for the production of biogas. The study aims at determining the amount of gas produced under 15, 25 and 35 days retention time using abattoir waste at ambient temperature. &#13;
Results achieved from the study indicated that the mobile biogas plant used can be fabricated and operated successfully with 100% local materials using the batch process. Abattoir waste used as a substrate in this study was found to have an average gas yield of 2.057m3/m3 of waste per day. This is good compared to yields from other organic wastes. The gas can also be cleaned to obtain pure methane which has several industrial applications such as in the manufacture of methanol. Since the gas produced from the experiment is combustible and can be used as fuel, which makes it valuable, the use of the gas is expected to offset to some extent the cost of managing the waste, which was used as a substrate in producing it.

<summary type="text">DEVELOPMENT OF A RATIONAL PROCEDURE FOR PAVEMENT DESIGN
ADERINOLA, OLUMUYIWA SAMSON
This study seeks to obtain an optimal pavement layout by combining theoretical and experimental field approaches to pavement design thereby side-tracking full scale tests for each new road. To do this, a comprehensive data on traffic census, fundamental properties of road materials such as asphalt, laterites and stabilized laterites were collected from relevant Ministries, Journals, textbooks, laboratory test reports and engineering companies. A computer (FORTRAN) programme was written using BISAR programme equation in conjunction with Smith-Witczak (1981) equation. The results were used to obtain a mechanistic pavement design with inputs from American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design guide. The approach produced an optimal pavement layout of 625mm (total thickness) that can exceed its design life with overloaded traffic. It also compares favourably with former procedures for tropical countries. Further research into this "theory-practical" approach is recommended.
