Abstract:
Ineffective use of management information system in decision making by some of the universities usually result in failure of academic programmes, ineffective budgeting, wastage of resources, inaccurate projection of students’ enrolment and manpower needs, poor motivation of staff, poor resource allocation among others. This study assessed the use of management information system in administration of tertiary institutions in Ondo state. It also identified the management information system facilities used in tertiary institutions in Ondo state, Nigeria, assessed the sources of information for the management information system and the contribution of management information system to the enhancement of the activities. Furthermore, the study also investigated the challenges confronting the use of management information system in Ondo state tertiary institutions. Survey research design was adopted for this study. Three universities were selected out of the seven universities in Ondo State. Primary data were used in this study. The primary data were collected with the aid of questionnaire. The results of this research shows that MIS facilities are all used in university’s administration. Results shows that management information systems could affect the whole process of universities' decision making such as problem identification, solutions identification and evaluation, solution selection & implementation, evaluating results and decision making in universities and higher education institutes in Nigeria. In testing the research hypothesis, the statistical results show that there is a slightly strong positive relationship (r = 0.221) between the use of management information system (MIS) and administration of Nigerian tertiary institutions. Finally, the study recommends that government should increase universities’ funding, which will enable them to improve their MIS facilities.
