dc.description.abstract This study was designed to examine the effect of ferulic acid and tannic acid on isoproterenol-induced cardiotoxicity in wistar albino rats. Thirty-six male albino rats (Wistar strain), weighing between 250±40g, divided into six groups (n=6) were used for the experiment. Groups I (control) and II received distilled water, while groups III –V, received ferulic(20mg/kg; b.w), tannic acid(25mg/kg; b.w) and their combined group(20&25mg/kg; b.w) respectively, while group VI received ramipril (2.5mg/kg; b.w) orally for 12 consecutive days, but on the 11th and 12th day however, groups II-VI received isoproterenol (100mg/kg b.w at 24hr interval) intraperitoneally. Twenty four hours after the last administration, animals were all anaesthetized with di-ethyl ether and sacrificed. Blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture. The serum, heart and liver tissues were harvested, homogenized and then analyzed for some biochemical parameters including: blood glucose, myocardial antioxidative parameters, glutathione, serum lipid profiles(triglyceride(TAG) and total cholesterol) diagnostic cardiac marker enzymes(lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and creatine kinase (CK), and histopathological examination of the heart and liver. The toxicities of ferulic acid, tannic acid and their combination were also evaluated by determining their effect on the activities of some biochemical indices(Alkaline phosphatase(ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in the heart and liver of the rats. Pretreatment with Ferulic acid, Tannic acid prevented the alterations in biochemical parameters resulting from ISP administration to rats. 20mg/kg b.w ferulic acid alone significantly reduced serum ALP and GSH levels, but maintained most other parameters at or near normal control levels. This present study showed that ferulic acid is non-toxic and also ameliorates isoproterenol- induced myocardial infarction in rats. en_US
