PROPOSED OSUN STATE CIVIC CENTRE, OSOGBO FOR OSUN STATE GOVERNMENT.(ENHANCING EFFECTIVE ILLUMINATION WITHIN ENCLOSED ARCHITECTURAL SPACES)

Abstract

A civic centre is a place within the community that is constructed to be its focal point, where diverse range of activities, concerts, theatres, recreation, entertainments and socio cultural events take place. The building should be designed in reverence to the cultural background of the community representing the image of the region and expected to attract international and global attention (UNESCO) as well as invariably ignite socio-economic activities in the state. This thesis tends to harmonise the relationship between a well arranged architectural space and the means of illuminating it. It also focuses on the sources of light (natural and artificial) befitting a space as well as the building materials and construction method to enhance effective illumination and visibility comfort of the occupants within the space. The source of natural illumination is daylight which is directed into the interior through the windows, clerestories, skylights, or monitors. The artificial illumination requires the consumption of energy especially electrical energy and are obtained by the use of incandescent lamps, fluorescent, spot lights and other electric lamps. The study focuses on the design concept of illumination and the suggested luminance level for a functional interior environment of a building.
