Abstract:
Internet provides numerous services and is an unparalleled resource that has become ubiquitous in everyday and even common place activities. It is therefore a very important utility in the optimal and qualitative functioning of all sectors of the economy especially the educational sector. This research work investigated the efficient use of internet utility made available in the Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA) Nigeria. To achieve this, monitoring of the internet traffic was carried out over a period of three months using wireshark protocol analyzer. The analyzed packets indicated that the university network was not well planned with scalability in mind. This has led to excessive broadcast in the network which often leads to users perceiving the network as being slow and users are carrying out non academic activities on the network. An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is developed to enable network administrators control the network better and other methods and solutions proposed to ensure an optimal and efficient use of the internet utility.
