The research revealed that quarries contribute significantly to the environmental abuse in Nigeria in general and Odigbo Local Government, Ondo State in particular where we have a considerable number of quarries. The quarrying activities that include operations such as bush clearing, drilling and blasting, haulage, and crushing generally exhibit environmental degradation. Four active and three closed quarries in Odigbo Local Government were visited. Representative soil and water samples were taken for analysis and results of the properties compared to standards. Physical examinations of the buildings, vegetation, crops and stagnated water were also undertaken to determine the effects of quarrying on the environment. Statically, analysis of expected dust output from the quarry operations and the actual output was carried out and quantity of dust lost into the atmosphere determined by difference and compared with the allowable quantity by law. The analysis of water showed that the streams and rivers near the operation areas are highly polluted and not suitable for domestic use. Water samples contain significant quantities of dissolve solids ranging from 500 – 600mg/lit. The natural soil in the areas are also highly affected by the quarrying operation and structures (buildings) in and around the quarries showed signs of dilapidation as a result of blasting as shown in the yellowish appearance of plant leaves and cracks on the building around the quarries. Signs of dust settlement on houses and vegetation were also observed. |
