Abstract:
The Physicochemical Examination of Domestic Water in Anyigba, Dekina Local
Government Council, Kogi State, was undertaken to determine the quality profile of
water used for domestic purposes. This was aimed at providing baseline information
that could facilitate further work a~'well as formulation of water supply and sanitation
policy for the area under study. Domestic water samples from streams, boreholes, and
rainwater collected from directly, asbestos and galvanised roofing sheets were
examined.
Analytical parameters examined include temperature, colour, taste, odour,
conductivity, turbidity, pH, DO, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, sulphate, phosphate, BOD,
iron, lead, arsenic, cadmium, zinc, aluminium, vanadium, manganese, copper, total
alkalinity, hexavalent-chromium, total hardness, calcium hardness, total solids,
cyanide, chloride and aggressive index. The parameters assayed were detected in the
following ranges: temperature 26-30°C, conductivity 10-203uS/cm, pH 6.9-8.4,
colour 1-31Pt-CO, DO 2.12-8.13mg/l, BOD 0.01-2.83mg/l, turbidity 0.00-9.81Fau,
nitrite 0.010-0.034mgN02/1, nitrate 0.61-1.52mgN03/1, ammonia 0.04-0.52mgNH3/l,
sulphate 0-1mgS04/1, chloride 0-107.51 mg/l, phosphate 0.0-1.2mgP04/1, total
hardness 0.20-75mgCaC03/l, calcium hardness 0.1 0-25mgCaC03/1, total alkalinity 5-
136mgCaC03/l, total solids 8-170mg/l, cyanide 0.000-0.018mg/l, aluminium 0.00-
0.32mgll, iron 0.000-0.021mg\1, zinc 0.0-2.3mg/l, manganese 0.0-1.3mg/l, copper
0.00-0.48mg/l and aggressive index 7.06-11.52. Arsenic, cadmium, vanadium,
hexavalent-chromium and lead were not detected in all the samples.
Results obtained from this work were compared to selected standard limits and
most of the determinants were below these standard limits. The analyses of the results
have shown that domestic water could best be obtained by direct collection of
rainwater from the atmosphere.
Further surveillance is recommended for manganese detected in Abu'ja stream,
Ajetachi borehole and Agbeji pond at concentrations above WHO provisional health
guide-level of 0.5mgMn/L.
