Abstract:
Monoazo (Dye 1) and Diazo (Dye 2) dyes were described, synthesized from sulphanilic acid by diazotization and coupling with 3-aminophenol and further coupled with N,N dimethylanilinewith 75.03 % 80.02 % yield respectively. The Monoazo dyegaveλmax of 435nm, melting point of 222-224 OC and the diazo also gaveλmax of 450 nm, melting point of 118-120 OC. The chemical structures of synthesized compound were studied using UV-Visible spectrophotometer, FTIR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. The synthesized dyes were applied on linen fibre which has been previously modified by acetylation, methylation and benzoylation. The modified linen fibre was accessed using FTIR and SEM. The methylated fibres afforded the highest mean value for light, wash and rub fastness, next to it was benzolated and acetylated fibre, although there is no significant level of difference between them when ran with SPSS (Anova). The maximum range value of mean and standard deviation was 3.33a±1.00,4.33a±1.00, 4.33a±0.58 and 4.67a±0.58 for untreated, benzoylated , acetylated and methylated respectively. The modulus of elasticity test carried out on the modified and unmodified fibre showed that the Young’s modulus value of 271.75 for acetylated, 140.47 for benzoylated and 23.78 for methylated. The fastness property study afforded very good light fastness, excellent washing and rub fastness.
