PRIVATE FIRMS PARTICIPATION IN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT:A CASE OF IBADAN SOUTH-WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, IBADAN, OYO STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This study focuses on the involvement of private firms in solid waste management with a case study of the core residential and government residential area of Ibadan South West Local Government area. The issue of solid waste management is an issue that the government cannot do alone, hence the need to assess the involvement of Private firms in its management. The study made a critical analysis of the problems faced by the private firms involved in the management of the solid waste in the study area for the possible policy options to enhance the quality of a good and sustainable environment. It also examined the private firms’ participation in solid waste management and various agencies involved. Informations were gathered by the use of structured questionnaires to interview the residents within the study area as well as the private firms’ and organisation of Ibadan Municipal Solid Waste Management Commission These findings reviewed lack of authorized dumping sites, lack of funds and manpower of the private firms to effectively manage and upgrade the environmental quality of the study area. The study was concluded by recommending adequate solid waste management for the improvement of the services of the private firms within the study area. It is believed that the implementation of these recommendation would undoubtly go along way into improving the effectiveness of solid waste management in the study area.
