ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A 132KV/11KV INJECTION SUBSTATION FOR FUTA COMMUNITY

Abstract

Power supply to many special organizations in Nigeria suffers from their connection to the national grid through access points that service other non-essential consumers. A possible solution to this problem for the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is the installation of a captive EHT injection substation that adequately satisfies the stringent requirements set by the national supply supervisory agency. This report presents the design of a 132kV/11kV injection substation for providing direct supply to FUTA and a few satellite communities nearby. In order to incorporate indigenous experience, visits were made to three injection substations in Western Nigeria and an analysis of some of their data was carried out. Using the experience and reflecting modern trends, the basic equipment and supply architecture for the proposed injection station were selected and a layout determined. Given that the major challenges experienced so far arise from the low level of automation in those stations, a SCADA system was defined, specified and designed using the Siemens WINCC software for the proprietary S7 – 300 PLC. All essential signals, equipment, logic and communications accessories are fully specified. The resulting SCADA system was tested and shown to be effective when simulated.
