PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND MINERAL CONTENTS OF WATER, SEDIMENT AND FISH OF RIVER OSE IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

Water, sediment and fish samples from river Ose in Owo local government area of Ondo State, Nigeria were collected; physico-chemical parameters and minerals were determined using standard analytical procedure. Results from the study revealed that physico-chemical parameters determined are within the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water and water meant for other recreational uses except for NO3- and PO43- with value of 69.8±0.03mg/l to 143.12±0.84mg/l and 85.16±0.14mg/l to 100.61±1.02 mg/l respectively are above the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit of 50mg/l and 9.5mg/l respectively. This may be due to agricultural activities around the area. The concentration of the minerals result (K, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in water shows that Fe with the values between 0.83±0.13mg/l to 3.04±0.46mg/l and Pb with the value of 0.02±0.01mg/l to 0.17±0.01mg/l were higher than the WHO limit except in location L2 where Pb is below detection level of the instrunent while K, Cu, Na, and Zn were within the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit and Cd was also below detection limit in all the locations. In the fish, the mean value result shows that the species Clarias gariepinus (African catfish) has the highest accumulation of metals with the total value of 521.64mg/kg than the Oreochromis niloticus (tilapia fish) of total value of 464.03mg/kg
