Abstract:
A 1.8 kVA emission-free electric power generation system was designed and implemented. The basic components of the system include dc motor, permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), control circuits and a DC/AC converter. The DC motor, which rotates the shaft of the PMSG to generate electricity, was powered by an 18 V battery for start-up. The battery is relieved immediately after start-up and charged back via a power supply unit. The dual 3-phase AC output of the PMSG was converted into a single phase DC voltage via a full bridge rectifier. The converted DC voltage from the PMSG was converted to AC with a DC/AC converter. The system also consist of a switching circuit which automatically turns off the generator and switch the load to AC mains supply whenever it is available. The system attains thermal stability at about 28oC with efficiencies of 91.62% at 100 W load, 89.55% at 500 W load, 88.45% at 800 W load, 84.05% at 1000 W load, 79.17% at 1200 W load, 72.58 at 1500 W load, and 54.99% at 1800 W load.
