dc.description.abstract The study reviews the procedural steps involved in the design of mechanical power transmission shafts. Mathematical algorithms for the design and drafting of Power Transmission Shafts were developed. This was followed by the development of a software package called SHAFTCAD2002 to design and draw shafts. The software was developed with Visual Basic 6.0 programming language. The developed software, which was tested using questions/illustrative examples picked from standard textbooks and companies, was found to be accurate and reliable. SHAFTCAD2002 is estimated to increase productivity forty times over manually prepared designs. The program is fully interactive, user-friendly and runs on Microsoft windows operating system en_US
