SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTI-BACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF METRONIDAZOLE DERIVATIVES

Abstract

The synthesis of metronidazole derivatives [ 1-(2-chloro ethyl)-2-thio formyl methylamino-4- nitro imidazole, 1-(2-chloro ethyl)-2-thio formyl ethylamino-4-nitro imidazole, 1-ethyl(2- aniline)-2-thio formyl anilino-4-nitro imidazole, 1-(2-chloro ethyl)-2-thio formyl anilino-4- nitro imidazole, 1-(2 chloro ethyl)-2-thio formyl para toluidene-4-nitro imidazole] was carried out using thionyl chloride and amines. The synthesized compounds were characterised using infrared spectroscopy. The compounds were subjected to antimicrobial tests, it was observed that compounds produced from primary amines were more reactive against bacteria compared to my starting material Metronidazole.
