Abstract:
The need for up-to-date and accurate map for the development of Nigeria cannot be overemphasized with the many advantages it offers. Nigeria map on OpenStreetMap is not up-to-date. OpenStreetMap is an initiative which does not need the involvement of the government and the mapping is carried out by volunteers which is crowdsourcing, thereby reducing cost and time of completion to the barest minimum and increasing coverage. Crowdsourcing awareness is still quite low and unexplored in Nigeria that brought about the need to design and develop an application that motivates, and source for crowd (volunteers). This research introduces gamification as a practical technique to motivate and improve participation in crowd sourced applications, especially in mapping the country. First, we present the outcome of an online survey where we analyse users’ opinion about game mechanics and OpenStreetMap. A gamified crowdsourcing application called Isokan was developed using gamification reward model for crowdsourcing in mapping the country Nigeria. Isokan was developed for routing new roads, validating geo-data such as name of road and verifying existing map geo-information. Result shows a 30% preference of the developed app by users over the Kort and Foursquare apps and the questionnaire indicate that users will be motivated with the use of gamification in the application
