ASSESSMENT OF MARITIME ACCIDENTS IN NIGERIAN TERRITORIAL WATERS OF LAGOS STATE

Abstract

It has become imperative in view of safety of life and properties at sea, this research will create a deep insight relating to maritime accident and also assist the Federal government to resolve different issues and establish the responsible organization for coast guard duties in the maritime industry. This study attempts to model maritime accident risk empirically using evidence from the analysis done. It will serve as a framework (both empirical and theoretical) for further research into the subject matter thereby filling an academic gap in the literature maritime accidents and creating a safer zone on Lagos Territorial Water. The research work was involved in collection of primary and secondary data. The procedure that was employed in the collection of primary data needed for this research was through interaction with different respondents and administration of a survey questionnaire which was used to collect their opinion on the causes and mitigating factors against maritime accident. The secondary data source was obtained from reliable sources and this includes: Published and unpublished works in reputable international journals, articles, texts, dissertations, theses and other relevant reports from Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) as contained in their archives. In order to achieve the stated objectives, Key data covering variables that is in-line with the study objectives are analyzed using the appropriate statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics will be used in the analysis of data.
