Abstract:
The study examined the level of terminal security and transport safety in an organized public transport operation considering Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). It focuses on assessing the safety status of public transport operator (LAMATA); examining the cases of insecurity and safety in the course of passenger operation; and Identifying strategies to minimize cases of insecurity and safety in public transport. The study employed a survey method which involve the use of questionnaire and statistical techniques. Descriptive Statistics and Factor Analysis were used for data analysis. The study showed that 51% of the passengers use Blue BRT their means regularly transportation various reasons among which are fare affordability; vehicle safety inspection control with minimal cases insecurity. In the ranking on Insecurity and Safety infrastructure in passenger operation, Vehicle safety inspection and control was ranked first in the mean ratings followed by Control of driving under the influence of alcohol with 4.39% and 4.25% respectively. the least in ranking table is Pedestrians crossing only with mean score of 4%. The concluded there exist insecurity in public transport terminal as confirmed by respondents is need to minimize the occurrence of insecurity in public transportation. The study recommends that the operators, the health workers, social workers, road safety workers and the security agencies should work at tandem health and safety international standard to achieve optimal result, because security and safety is a collective responsibility of all transport stakeholders.
