Abstract:
Alkyd resin was prepared from Hura crepitans (sand box) seed oil and Luffa cylindrica (sponge
gourd) seed oil. The oil was extracted from the seed. Physicochemical properties and hydrolysis
of the oil were carried out using standard methods of analysis. The iodine value for Hura seed oil
was 170.43 g I 2 /100 g while Luffa recorded 115.38 g I 2 /100 g, Saponification value for Hura was
235.15 mgKOH/g while 190.78 mgKOH/g was recorded for Luffa, Acid values for Hura and Luffa
were 3.10 and 3.30 mgKOH/g, respectively; free fatty acid was 2.10 mg/g for Hura seed oil and
2.30 mg/g for Luffa seed oil, Moisture content for Hura and Luffa were 0.06 % and 0.10 %,
respectively, Specific gravity were 0.92 g/m for Hura seed oil and 0.91 g/m for Luffa seed oil,
Refractive index for both seed oils were 1.47.
Epoxidation
of fatty acid was carried out, and epoxy group was confirmed with FT-IR analysis. The resin was
produced using alcoholysis-polyesterification method in an inert environment using nitrogen gas,
fatty acid first was first reacted with glycerol and the monoglyceride obtained with phthalic
anhydride. The resin produced were then evaluated, the drying time for Hura and Luffa resin was
24 h, both Hura and Luffa resin were soluble in Acetone, Methanol, Ethanol, and Toluene.
Chemical resistance, water has no effect on both resins after 18 h and immersion in 3 M NaoH it
was total removal after 24 h for both resins. Acid Value for Hura and Luffa resins were 6.50 and
9.80 after 180 mins.
