APPRAISAL OF OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT OF INTER-CITY MOTOR PARKS IN IBADAN A CASE STUDY OF IBADAN NORTH-EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Abstract

Thestudy appraised the operation and management of inter-city motor parks in Ibadan taking Ibadan North-East Local Government Area as a case study. The objectives pursued include the assessment of the present mode of operation and management, assessment of the existing facilities and identification of various problems confronting efficient and proper functioning of the motor parks as well as making practicable suggestions for improvement. The transport system and total quality management concepts were adopted for the study. Existing literatures were also reviewed to enhance the proper understanding of the problem under study. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Interview guides were prepared to collect information from both the transport union and the local government officials. Also, questionnaires were administered on 116 transport operators and 100 passengers from the two motor parks in the study area. Stratified random and purposive sampling techniques were adopted for the questionnaires administration. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The analysis revealed that inadequate land area, poor organization, power abuse, inadequate facilities and problems of touts as well as inefficient management strategy were the major problems militating against the proper functioning of the motor parks. Based on the findings, recommendations such as formulation of deliberate motor park management policy, appropriate organizational and operational modalities, establishment of more functional motor parks, proper organization of activities and control of touts as well as restrictions on excessive commercial activities were proffered.
