AN APPRAISAL OF HOSPITAL WASTE DISPOSAL SYSTEM; A CASE STUDY OF EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, ADO- EKITI

Abstract

This project aimed at the generation, treatment and disposal of wastes at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (E.S.U.T.H) Ado-Ekiti with a view to ensuring a sustainable waste disposal system. It examines the wastes generated and identifies the best suitable waste treatment technology for the onsite treatment of medical in the study area. This was further complemented with literature review. The project sourced data for the study were from both primary and secondary sources. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics. The result of findings shows that there was no sanitation unit for medical waste management in the study area. Also, there is none of the units surveyed treated its medical wastes before disposing of it into bins. Waste management practices employed by the surveyed units included disposing their wastes through the use of incinerator. The wastes are dumped in open incinerator without safety devices. This study recommends the need for a legislation that will help enforce standard practices in handling of medical waste.
