Abstract:
The training of transport personnel and operatives in Nigeria institute of transport technology in Zaria (NITT) is the focus of this research work. The research adopts the ex – port factors research design to explore the extent the institution had fulfil her mandate, the extent the operatives and personnel needs had been met and the training capacity the institution had in place vis-à-vis utilization. The research makes use of secondary data; a rework of the evaluation form given to student or participant after the successful completion of their programme. NITT as an institution offers 159 courses, among 159 courses, 80 courses had patronage and the remaining 79 courses were with no patronage. The 80 programme that were with no patronage in NITT, data shows that the training meets with the expectation of the trainees and facilitators were expert of their field. The students’ hostels has a maximum occupancy rate of 1.48 and a minimum occupancy rate of 0.71 in year 2017 and 2016 respectively. In year 2017, the institution was unable to accommodate 48% of the entire student enrolled for the programme in NITT and year 2016 recorded the least number of hostel occupancy which was 29%. In year 2017, 64% of the library facility were utilized and year 2016 was with the least level utility (31%). Laboratory facility shows 12% in year 2017 and 6% in year 2016 level of utility usages. The simulator utility with the maximum utility was 2017 with the record of 24% utility and the least was in 2016 with a record of 11% level of utility. The workshop utility with the maximum utility was 2017 with a record of 4% utility and the least was in 2016 with a record of 2% level 0f utility. The classroom level of occupancy for the year 2016 was with the least and the occupancy level was 3.9% based on number of students that enroll, while the maximum level of occupancy recorded for the period of studied was 8.1% occupancy rate in year 2016. Training programmes was ranked 1st among the courses offered in the institution with patronage. All the 5 courses on training programmes has patronage, which makes the training programmes the highest courses with patronage and aviation courses was the least among the category of programmes/courses offered in NITT – Daria. Only 3 (12%) courses were patronage and 22 (88%) were with no patronage. It was recommended that the institute should sensitize the general public and transport based firms about the role of the organization in training of personnel and operatives on any choice of mode of transport.
