dc.description.abstract This Study was conducted to assess the antistaphylococcal and mycochemical properties of Trametes polyzona. Tramates polyzona is a cosmopolitan mushroom. This mushroom was collected from dead woods in farmland around Akungba- Akoko and the mycochemical constituents were extracted using methanol and acetone. Antistaphylococcal effect of the extract was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus isolated from blood, urine, soil and wound . Mycochemical analysis revealed the presence of saponin, tannin, flavonoid, terpenoid, alkaloid, cardiac glycosides in the mushroom extract. Extract obtained from fermented Trametes polyzona showed higher and better activity (Zone of inhibition of 28.00mm) on Staphylococcus aureus isolated from blood at the cocentration of 600mg/mL. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract against Staphylococcus aureus ranged from 100mg/mL to 200mg/mL. Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC MS) of the methanolic extract revealed the presence of fourteen compounds namely: Caprylic acid methyl ester, Tridecanoic acid methyl ester, Myristoleic acid methyl ester, Cis- 10 pentadecanoic acid methyl ester, Palmitoleic acid methyl ester, Heptadecanoic acid methyl ester, Stearic acid methyl ester, Elaidic acid methyl ester, Oleic acid methyl ester, Linolelaidic acid methyl ester, g- linoleic acid methyl ester, x- linolenic acid methyl ester, Heneicosanoic acid methyl ester and Cis- 11- 14- Elcosadienoic acid methyl ester. Results from this study showed that extracts obtained from T. polyzona contain bioactive compounds with potent antistaphylococcal and antioxidant properties. en_US
