In this study a simple technique of producing biogas from animal dung
under measurable conditions is investigated. The specific objectives are to
design, construct and test (using a chosen waste as substrate) a suitable
mobile transportable biogas system (digester) which can be easily utilized
for the production of biogas. The study aims at determining the amount of
gas produced under 15, 25 and 35 days retention time using abattoir waste
at ambient temperature. Results achieved from the study indicated that the mobile biogas plant used can be fabricated and operated successfully with 100% local materials using the batch process. Abattoir waste used as a substrate in this study
was found to have an average gas yield of 2.057m3/m3 of waste per day.
This is good compared to yields from other organic wastes. The gas can
also be cleaned to obtain pure methane which has several industrial applications such as in the manufacture of methanol. Since the gas produced from the experiment is combustible and can be used as fuel, which makes it valuable, the use of the gas is expected to offset to some extent the cost of managing the waste, which was used as a substrate in producing it. |
