Abstract:
Ado-Ekiti the capital city of Ekiti State is being faced by the problem of
inadequate water supply due to reasons ranging from socio-economic to technical
problems. This research work evaluated the possible causes of inadequate water supply in this urban center as a result of increased influx or people. socio-economical growth and indusuial grovvth. The projected population plus the present supply and projected water demand were analyzed to determine the necessary quantity required and the future deficit needs to be taken care of. Also, the geological formation of this area was studied to obtain the proportion of the ground water that can serve as additional source or supply. It was realized that the region was dominated by massive charnockite spread and little meta sedimentary rock of the quartize and fractured granitic type. This ch.nuockitc docs not permit groundwater development hence the limitation to the usage of groundwater. In this work, surface water is seen as the only dependable and reliable source of water in this region. Analysis of the available data ()n the nearest existing schemes established that about 60% of the production from Little Osse in Lgbe can be used to augment the present supply. It is evident as well that the supply from Eros end must remain and be steady. Also. Ureje must be operating at its fullest production capacity in conjunction with the supplies from these complementary schemes before the problem ofwaier shortage in this region can be alleviated. The aged pipe networks are to be replaced to minimize waste and provide
better services. There is also need to embark upon extension work to the newly
developed :1l'C~1to promote industrial and socio-economic growth.
