dc.description.abstract Buildings are not just means by which man protects himself against the effect of weather condition but also a means with which he can harness the desirable effect of weather condition to satisfy his need. One of such desirable effect is light. This thesis is all about lighting and it's relationship with architectural space. With the main focus on the effective use of light in architectural space, this study with the aid of relevant graphical illustration covers such areas as the behaviour of light in space, vision and human perception, natural and artificial light source, lighting design and form, daylight design techniques, lighting measurement and control. While seeking ways of improving lighting condition of interior spaces through the design of a Civic Center, it is hoped that this research study will help in solving the problems associated with building lighting and also lead designers of interior space to understanding the essentials needed to achieve appropriate conditions for visual task and to provide illuminated space which satisfy human needs. For the purpose of proper understanding, this written thesis is divided into seven (7) chapters; with Chapter One being the general introduction including the aim of the study, Chapter two reviews relevant literatures relating to the subject matter, Chapter three reviews further relevant literature as it concerns with day lighting, chapter four contains analysis of survey and data collected while Chapter five examines the design environment including the synthesis of the study area and site analysis. Chapter six deals with the proposed design and finally the summary and conclusion are contained in Chapter seven. en_US
