ABSTRACT
The conventional school building design that is teacher-centered is also likely to be very popular in Nigeria.
This forms the basis for undertaken this study with a view to look at how architecture as a profession can
assist in the design and construct active learning environments, which can enhance student performance
and self-cognitive development. The method of the research involved online searches with the Google
Scholar search engine. Search themes included active learning, secondary school, school design and
learning environment. The outcome of the research highlights how architecture could be used to introduce
the changes in the education system in Nigeria. The review shows the application of natural lighting, open
plan system, communal spaces, flexible furniture and outdoor learning spaces as valuable concepts towards
realization of active learning in secondary schools. The paper suggests that some of the identified principles
should be adopted towards the provision of better learning in secondary schools.
