| dc.description.abstract | ...The Federal University of Technology, Akure, which came into legal existence in September,1981, is one of the five autonomous full-fledged Federal Universities of Technology that now exist in the country. Its first Vice Chancellor, Professor Theodore Idibiye Francis, was formally appointed on November 19, 1981 but did not assume duties until January 1, 1982. He worked single-handedly to lay the foundation of the University, under the guidance of a 13-man Governing Council, headed by the first Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council,the late High Chief (Dr) Gabriel Akin-Deko, until August 1982 when other princinpal officers joined him. Later, a crop of experienced and highly-motivated academic and other staff was recruited to facilitate the commencement of academic activities. These activities took off in November 1982, when 149 students were enrolled in the three foundation Schools.
