ASSESSMENT OF THE UTILISATION OF OSSIOMO RIVER FOR WATER SUPPL Y TO ABUDU TOWN, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This project focuses on the utilisation of Ossiomo River for water supply to Abudu town in Orh ionrnwon Local Govemment Area of Edo State. To achieve this goal, hydrological appraisals were carried out to determine the quantity and quality of the water available, as well as the adequacy and dependability of the supply. The data collected and analysed include the hydrological data of the river, rainfall data of the study area, and other information such as the census data of Abudu town and maps. Following a reconnaissance survey of the study area, a transverse survey was conducted to determine spot elevations along the proposed pipeline routes and the service reservoir location. Base on the data analysis, a share intake system, treatment plant components and distribution network. were designed. Cost estimates were also computed. The study shows that Ossiomo River is a perennial river with the capacity to sustain water supply scheme for Abudu town and environs. The minimum annual discharge of the river is 10.64m3/s, which is considered as the safe yield for the design or the scheme. With a total water requirement of 0.138m3/s to the town, the scheme users at" the river can still have sufficient water. In terms of the financial implications of the project, a modest total cost of N240,000,000 has been proposed. This is quite feasible and within the executive scope of local and state governments, and with possible assistance from the federal government.
