dc.description.abstract This project seeks to assess the implication of the dangers posed by haphazard disposal of solid waste on the built environment by examining its impact on the inhabitants, the building structures as well as the neighborhood with particular reference to mass housing scheme Abuja,Nigeria. Mostof the residential areas are today grappling with the problems causedby mounting heaps of solid wastes from their environments. An average Nigerian in his household, institution and industry encounters some tones of solid waste yearly. Several Nigerians have considered it a cheap way of disposing off their solid waste by setting the mixed waste on fire in a little corner in their backyard or in a very open place. Therefore, this project undertakes a study of the solid waste build up phenomenon with a view toward finding ameliorative measures that would help reduce their negative effectson residential beautification and sanitation. And hopefully, to provide insights into easing, reducing, minimizing and avoiding the evolving solid, waste encroachment of city streets and roads. A review of literature which is hinged on the framework of healthy city concept is used as a standard for quality. Closed and open ended questions were administered on randomly sampled residents of Abuja randomly and analyzed using simple descriptive analysis. The study also recommends rigorous public enlightenment, re introduction of hygiene studies from primary education, enforcement of environmental and waste disposal protection laws with corresponding policy statements to help achieve the Healthy City Concept of the United Nations. en_US
